Chapter 1 Page 1Tablatures of Several
canticles and Songs for the Organ and
Lute /, some of which have two parts to be plucked on the lute
and one singing part; / others with three
instrumental parts; / tabulated by Arnolt Schlick,
Organist to the Count Palatine/
and arranged to be printed in the
town of Mainz, the birth-place of the art of printing,
[under the conditions] laid out as follows:
Chapter 1 Page 2This artistic book and ornate work,
Planted on Orpheus's mountain,
Printed for the sake of God and the world,
Are evidence of what herewith is announced:
That the Imperial Majesty
Has privileged and graced this book,
So that no printer is to reprint it
During the next ten years, on pain of great revenge
And punishment, as well as a great fine,
As it is written in the mandate,
Which I herewith make known to you,
So that no one can claim by way of excuse
That it had not been announced to him.
Whosoever violates this, shall be [subject] to severe [punishment]...
