Abstract:
This document contains the 1625 resolutions concerning the Dutch School Order, a state-imposed curriculum designed to standardise the teaching in Latin schools for students preparing for university. The new school order was part of an ongoing ideological struggle to shape education, particularly in competition with Jesuit efforts to influence curricula. As the commentary shows, a notable provision in these resolutions was that no one in the Dutch Republic could claim exclusive rights to the books included in the school order. Although this decision was driven primarily by local circumstances rather than a systematic legal rationale, it offers an early example of restrictions on exclusive publishing rights. The contours of what would come to be known as the public domain become visible here, albeit in a limited context concerning textbooks used in Latin schools.
