in the place commonly known as Belvedere* by
a notary public.** Eleuthero Aglicero***
by order of His Supreme Holiness
the Pope. In the year 1560.

* Belvedere: Italian for "Fine view", the name of part of the
Vatican Palace and gardens
** Ironic reference to the Pope's autocratic rule which was
never in want of the help of any "notary public"!
*** Eleuthero Aglicero: Name of a fictive printer or a
fictive public notary, from the Greek Eleuthero = "liberator"

Tenor of the Privilege


The most holy Pope has prohibited - on pain of excommunication,
for long and short periods, of a high and deep kind - everyone
from [re-]printing this book in the whole of Italy, France and
Spain, but we cannot forbid it in Germany
where the most wicked Lutherans are.
